I did it... I finally turned my curves from stepped to auto. I feel like I was a bit stuck in terms of knowing when the blocking stage was over, I got a lot of feedback throughout the blocking stage and I felt that I would spend the rest of my days blocking and refining my poses but finally I got told by our studio assistant to start splinning the animation so I did. I feel like next time I have to be more aware of the time I have as this is what will determine the amount of time I have for blocking and splinning. I must say that when I hit the auto button I was scared as I didn't know how bad my animation would look as I was so used to seeing it in steeped tangents. The result was kind of scary at the start and I felt a bit lost in terms of how to make it look less floaty and re-work the timing, this is when I truly understood the emphasis one of my tutors put in 'starting to spline as soon as possible'. Blocking Its been a long week but here it is, my blocking for my animation. I had found this stage a bit confusing in the past and I think that having a live reference really made the blocking process so much faster and easier to understand. Now I know that one needs to have a reference in order to have the bases in terms of timing and posing, some people say that it is cheating but in reality even cartoon animation has a foundation based on real world physics. I personally really like cartoon animation and would love to continue this path and thanks to the help of life action reference I will be able to work faster through my blocking and of course not copy the life action fully but instead adding exaggeration or special effects to the animations. The time to sort out the acting for my story has come!! I started this with this thumbnails which gave me a sense of the very basic actions of both of my characters. In terms of poses I initially had the following animatic: This Animatic was useful to make decisions on the poses I wanted to have later on in my live action reference and blocking. Here we can see the Mamuerto putting on its eye and then proceeding to offer the brain to Franketo, the cut reveals Franketo eating a hot dog (human food) and reacting to Mamuerto's proposal of swapping foods. This is the idea I had from the start after feedback from my Animation tutor I changed the food to a cake as he said the second voice sounded quite posh and the hot dog didn't suit it very well, I believe it was a wise decision to change it to a cake as it resulted more interesting in the live action reference. Yes I have changed the location of my story but it is all for the good. My initial idea of having Zombie (Mamuerto) enjoying a juicy brain and then offering it to human (Franketo) hasn't changed, the thing that changed is the setting of the story. I initially had this idea of having the Mamuerto sitting by itself outside Franketo's house, now instead of having Franketo enjoying his cake in his house I decided to have it sitting on the table with Mamuerto. The reason why I change the setting was because I wanted to make the story a bit more simple in terms of composition and also the idea of a zombie having a nice cozy dinner with a human I believe is strange and fun. Above you will see the first stage of my animation in a 3D space, this is called a 3D layout which serves as a foundation for the characters interaction with the environment. Basic initial layout of Animation Environment The images seen above are showing two different things, an attempt to turn Malcolm's rig into a zombie and an initial layout of the environment for my 11 Second Club animation. When I started thinking about potential stories for my animation I decided to go for a story that involved a zombie. I was very excited to have settled with a story but this feeling was soon replaced with doubt as I found myself looking for zombie rigs in the internet without success. In my search I encountered a zombie rig from 'Hotel Transylvania' that was released by Sony, I got really happy until I realised that the rig didn't have any facial rigs; once again I found myself in 'trouble'. After spending a few hours searching for zombie rigs I asked myself, "What if I modify a human rig to make it look like a zombie?". Preparing for 1st Assignment of Year 2! This week we finally met the so long waited eleven second audio that would determine our route in this assignment and I must say that the audio could have been a bit more punchier but it could have been worse... The audio's script is the following: Voice 1: Be funny if we both got it wrong, eh? If I did the good thing, and you did the bad one? (chuckles) Voice 2: (nervous laughter)… No! Wouldn’t be funny at all! It doesn't seem that bad at first and you even think it's an easy one when you first hear it but in reality it's something more complex.
